Flooding Danger As River Rises

Wagga. Eastern Riverina areas faced the most serious flooding in several years as the Murrumbidgee River and tributaries rose to their highest level since 1960. Low-lying farmlands and many roads have been flooded following steady, drenching rain in the past 24 hours.

Last night floodwaters closed the Hume High way, the Brungle Road eight miles from Gundagai and the Lacmalac road two miles from Tumut. The Sturt Highway near Tarcutta was also closed.

The Blowering Dam was 2ft over the spillway to night and the Burrinjuck Dam was also discharging heavily.

Albury is set for a major flood today as the Murray River crept toward an unexpected 18ft. Last night Albury had one of the worst floods in more than 10 years as floodwaters swept across the South Albury flats. The city was deluged with water.
