Gundagai to Tumut Railway

Goulburn Herald

22 November 1899

The parliamentary standing committee on public works met yesterday. The business was the further consideration of the expediency of constructing a line of railway from Gundagai to Tumut.

Mr. C. Peterson (assistant dairy expert, department of mines and agriculture) was examined.

There was he stated, some good dairying country between Brungle and Tumut. There was a newly established butter-factory in the Gilmore Valley, which was the only one in the district. The district, as a whole, was suitable for dairying, and he was of opinion a better class of butter could be made there than on the south cost. With increased facilities for getting produce to market, the district, he considered, would develop into an important dairying centre.

The committee meet again today.
