During the past ten years the population of the Municipal District of Gundagai has increased fifty per cent.

In 1895 Tumut had a population of 300 in excess of Gundagai, in 1900 Gundagai led Tumut by a narrow margin, now the positions have been reversed, the figures being slightly in favor of Tumut.
