Private John Ryan, V.C., hero of the last war, who died in hospital yesterday from pneumonia, had battled for years against adversity.

He died in want at the age of 54 years.

He had tramped the streets for months looking for a job, and on the day he was to have started work he had to be taken to hospital.-
