Opening of the Gundagai Bridge

29 August 1867 The Tumut and Adelong Times

The ceremony of opening the Gundagai bridge for permanent traffic we understand is to take place on Monday the 9th of September.

At present the name of the bridge is not decided on, some propose that it shall be christened the Edinburgh, others the Duke's Bridge, others again think it not inappropriate to name it after H. R. H. Prince Alfred, in honour of his visit to the colonies about the time.

Of the three suggestions we are of opinion (of course it is only individual) that the latter would be the most appropriate.

It is contemplated to mark the occasion by inviting the residents of towns south of Gundagai to participate in the ceremony, it being one of vast importance to the commercial interests of the colony.
